A One-of-a-Kind Competition That’s Sure to Thrill

For three decades, the annual pedigree Stage Stop Race has been delighting spectators and giving top dog teams and mushers from across North America and Europe a place to gather and put their skills to the test. This multi-day race is set up in 30- to 35-mile stages and comes with an impressive purse included, often topping out at over $200,000. Since kicking off in 1996, the annual Pedigree Stage Stop Race has only continued to grow, but it is consistently organized to start in Jackson Hole at the end of January.

Race Details at the Annual Pedigree Stage Stop Race

There are seven timed stages that make up the race as a whole for those who participate in the annual Pedigree Stage Stop experience. Each stage is hosted by a western Wyoming community making the stretch a one-of-a-kind experience to look forward to enjoying. US Forest Service trails are used for the entirety of the event and in addition to competitors and their dog teams, this race is always well attended by spectators and media alike. Those who are hoping to compete must submit applications by September of the previous year and mushers are invited to enter a pool of up to 16 dogs at a time. The maximum daily team size is set at 12 dogs and the team that finishes the entire race in the fastest time is declared the Stage Stop Champion.

Stage Stops Along the Race Route

The annual Pedigree Stage Stop Race begins in Jackson Hole before competitors set out to traverse the Shoshone National Forests and the public lands of the Bridger-Teton in pursuit of the Stage Stop Champion title. Stage Stop 1 is then hosted in Pinedale, Wyoming, which is in the western portion of the state and enjoys a landscape defined by the Wind River Mountains and the Continental Divide Trail System. Stage Stop 2 is also located in Pinedale, while Stage Stop 3 takes competitors to Big Piney and Marbleton, Wyoming. This community is known as an economic hub for gas and oil production and is home to the iconic Green River and the Wyoming Range Mountains. Stage Stop 4 is also at Big Piney and Marbleton, while Stage Stop 5 brings dog teams into Kemmerer, Wyoming. Known as the Fossil Capitol of the World, Kemmerer is also popular among ice fishers and snowmobilers in the winter looking to make the most of outdoor recreation and fun. Stage Stop 6 is hosted in Lander, Wyoming, which is within easy reach of Sinks Canyon State Park and the Historic South Pass City. Stage Stop 7 brings competitors to their final destination in Dubois, Wyoming, which is known for its Old West charm and is the place where the final race banquet is hosted as well.
