Jackson Hole offers up just the right winter weather for travelers who are excited to make the most of seasonal outdoor fun and adventure! Colder temperatures here can last from October through April, but if you want to maximize time on the slopes or exploring snowy trails, your best bet is to plan your winter getaway for some time between January and March. This timeframe also comes with the advantage of falling outside of Jackson Hole’s busy tourist season in the summer—another win for winter travelers! On average, daily lows in Jackson Hole between December and February linger in the single digits, while daily highs can get up into the upper 20s or lower 30s. There’s a lot of annual snowfall in Jackson Hole as well creating spectacularly glittery scenery, photo-worthy moments, and plenty of inspiration for heading out to the slopes. No matter how long you plan to spend in the great outdoors during your Jackson Hole winter getaway, it’s important to pack the essentials. Make sure your suitcase hosts ski pants and a jacket as well as winter gloves, hats, sunscreen, sunglasses, goggles, and waterproof winter boots too.

Try Dogsledding to a Hot Spring

If you’re looking to pair the best of winter outdoor fun with a warm-up at the end as your reward, dog sledding to a local hot spring is the way to do it. The team at Jackson Hole Iditarod Sled Dog Tours leads guided trips over dramatic terrain via dog sled that come with beautiful Gros Ventre Mountain views included! At the end of your ride, you’ll find yourself at a turquoise hot spring where you can soak, relax, and savor the moment. A tour of this type also includes lunch before heading back with the sleds. You’ll get to learn a ton about dog sledding, the team in Jackson Hole, and hot springs along the way.

More Hot Springs to Explore in the Name of Winter Fun

Near Jackson Hole, winter travelers can access a few great hot spring destinations to check out that are wonderful for a relaxing and scenic moment. Head over to Granite Hot Springs by snowmobile, snowshoes, or skis during your Jackson Hole stay to enjoy time in a soaking pool and thermal-fed swimming area that averages 104 degrees year-round. Another great option in town is the Astoria Hot Springs located south of Jackson Hole in nearby Hoback. Strap on the Snowshoes and Head to Grand Teton National Park

In the warm weather months, Grand Teton National Park is mesmerizing to explore on foot. In the wintertime, the same captivating trails can be conquered with snowshoes instead! This is a challenging, but endlessly fun experience for those who are looking to take in the scenery at their own pace and include some winter wildlife-watching into the outing too. Grand Teton National Park welcomes upward of 170 inches of snow annually, so you’ll have plenty of powder to trek through during your visit. Jackson Hole is fortunate to be home to a stunning National Elk Refuge and during the winter, visitors have the opportunity to view herds of elk roaming the terrain while enjoying a horse-drawn sleigh ride in good company. Summer is understandably a busy time for visitors looking to maximize their access to national parks and all of the charm Jackson Hole inevitably offers up. That said, if you’re the type of traveler that appreciates plenty of room to move and not having to worry about waiting in line for anything at all, fall is a better time of year to head this way. Walking around town in autumn is a breeze and enjoying time in the parks is just as pleasant and stress-free. You don’t even have to worry about not being able to dine at your favorite restaurants because there shouldn’t be any stiff competition when it comes to reservations like there could be in the summer months.

You Can Make the Most of Cooler Temperatures

Summer can see temperatures rise significantly across Jackson Hole, but by the time fall rolls around, comfortable temperatures are truly the norm for visitors. September travelers can expect highs to linger in the 70s midday with nighttime temps dropping to the 30s. This means you’ll want to pack in layers, but you can also make the most of outdoor fun without having to sweat it out!

It’s the Perfect Time to Explore National Parks

Those who are looking forward to a fall hike will want to be sure to make time for the trail that runs by Phelps Lake as well as Cascade Canyon and Granite Canyon routes. The bears haven’t quite gone into hibernation by fall, so being prepared on the trails this time of year is still important. It’s also an idyllic season to view fall foliage! Late September tends to be a terrific time to admire the changing colors with trees turning from yellow to gold and eventually to deep reds throughout the park. If finding the best views of fall foliage is your goal, you won’t have trouble doing so and you’re going to want to be sure your camera is ready to go for the experience.
